BBC TV Countryfile Photo Comp (relevant to UK members only)

Post by puzzledpaul »

Since the theme this year is 'All creatures great and small', I was wondering if I'd got anything suitable / good enough to consider entering in the above.

Rule 13 states (amongst other stuff) that entries shouldn't have been 'previously published' - I decided to seek clarification of this section re pics that have (only) been uploaded / displayed etc on sites such as this.

I received a response this morning and copy it here for anyone else considering having a go :)

Thank you for your inquiry about the Countryfile Photographic
Competition.

I've sought advice from our legal team and I regret to say that under
the terms of the rules, we can't allow you to enter a photo that's
appeared on another website because it does constitute publication.

You may be interested to know that we are going to review the rules for
next year's competition to reflect the increasingly popularity of
publishing photographs on the web. I suspect when the rules were
initially drafted, the "no publication" rule was included to exclude
photos that had been published in photography magazines and the like.

I'm sorry that I haven't got more positive news but I hope you
understand that our decision is driven by a desire to be fair to all.

With Best Wishes,

How dumb! Most web hosting site are equivalent to the old way of showing a print to your family and saying, isn't this neat. From what I understand, the publishing rule is designed to promote work that would not normally be seen and to limit the influence of professional photographers.

How the hell they are going to police this, I don't know. How will they know a photo has been posted? What happens when someone points out a winner has posted the photo on a hosting site? This will be a nightmare.
