Yes.
Nothing exciting photographically. I am amazed and fascinated by the fact that invertebrates can build structures.
In this case the larva has to select a piece of plant material of the correct thickness - maybe not too difficult.
It then has to 'manufacture' 4 pieces of the same length and width to add to the existing case. It looks like the 4 walls of each new extension are not always of the same piece of material.
As it extends the case each new layer has to be just a little bit longer, on each of the 4 sides, than the previous layer.
The case ends up of being constructed of what looks like 100's of individual pieces.
Unbelievable!

Yes, very fascinating!

Here are some similar structures in the field, with considerable discussion by readers: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... php?t=5838

Great shots Rik and some good discussion by some talented readers! I had forgotten your post - it was 6 years ago.
'My' cases are similar to yours, they came from a local fast-flowing gravel-bottomed stream on October 15 2014.

I've only ever seen them with random pieces of stick, and stones. And in one case, small snails cemented into the walls. Some had live snails living in them long after the caddis had gone.

Thanks. They say that time flies when you're having fun. I must have been having lots of fun, because it's hard to realize that was 6 years ago.

September 2008 it was, on a road trip that marked the end of my life doing contract R&D. On return, I started writing Zerene Stacker. Old dog, new bone...

Douglas Adams had it wrong when he said humans were the third most intelligent species on the planet.

PS: Thanks for sharing these wonderful images NU.
