Sort of an odd mix of subjects. My recent samples haven't turned up any unusual interesting subjects, but one contained quite a few desmids and amoeba tests. So I gathered up a grouping of each (nowhere near as ambitious as Beatsy's diatom circle... that still amazes me!)

The desmids are oblique brightfield with crossed polarizers. Olympus BHS with a 4X and 20X objective.

The amoeba tests were taken "uncovered" (to avoid crushing any of them) with my Nikon MM-11 setup. I've been playing around with some simple lighting methods to give me brightfield, darkfield, Rheinberg (with a little added "top light" if needed).

These are wonderful. I've seen a lot of testate amoeba recently and mentioned them to my neighbour (a builder) who likes to come and have a look through the microscope now and again. I joked that people often say builders are slime, how would he like to see some slime that can build Smile After looking, he suggested I arrange some like the diatoms, but I dismissed the idea. Too big, and not all that interesting - I thought. You certainly disproved that notion! Lovely images and very interesting too. It really is amazing that these complex structures are built by single-celled, brainless bits of protoplasm.

Might be an idea to embed some in resin and grind them down like a mineral section. Be interesting to see the inside and get clear cross sections of the walls. Hmmm...
