raynox adapter for microscope objectives

Post by Clintonwake »

Hi

I notice that some people are using m/objs with the raynox . I have the raynox 250 and wondering what adapter I need to get to connect a eg, 4x m/obj to the front of the raynox.

BTW, if anyone here has experience I would like to know what your thoughts are about the clarity/quality of the output using this setup on a bellows.

cheers
Denis

I just happened to have something very close to this rig mounted up, so I snapped this shot for you.

Image

See the thread HERE for links into eBay for the various adapters. Be sure that the last adapter is 52mm filter thread to m42x1.0 Pentax screw thread and not m42x0.75 filter thread. The cone is M42-to-RMS and the objective is a Nikon CFI BE 4X NA 0.10 like HERE with the barrel removed to avoid vignetting (HERE).

I haven't shot a stack with this setup.

Quick snapshot looks very good even into the corners. These are actual pixels from the corner of a Canon T1i (APS-C, 15 megapixels):

Image

Magnification with this setup is nominally 4 * 125/200 = 2.5X. This is effective f/12.5 (=2.5/(2*0.1)), which is near optimum on my sensor. The DOF is nominally 0.055 mm.

You can try increasing the magnification by adding extension behind the Raynox, but when I tried this to about 4X the corners went astigmatic. Probably you'd get better results with a Raynox 150 at that magnification.

5. m42 Iris adapter

http://www.ebay.es/itm/IRIS-DIAPHRAGM-A ... 568wt_1096

It is a newer version, old is not for sale anymore; you will still need the " thin M42 adapter" for you objective from ssame seller

6. M42 male to 52 male adapter
The only one I find now is this one

http://www.ebay.es/itm/REVERSING-RING-M ... _477wt_886

7. 52 female to 49 male adapter

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/49mm-to-52mm ... 803wt_1015

8. 43 female to 52 male adapter

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/52-to-43mm-5 ... 77e&_uhb=1

9. 52 female to M42 male adapter

http://www.ebay.es/itm/42mm-p-1-0-to-52 ... 1393wt_882

But you do not really need the adapters for reverse, I used them only in the test. Raynox seems to work best in normal possition unless long extension between raynox and objective is used

EDIT My Raynox DCR-250 works way better reversed

Regards

Sometimes including the term "coupler" in your search turns up more hits.

Thanks Harold

I tried on US & AU site for coupler & adapter and variations of the keywords but no joy. You have to excuse my lack of knowledge as I am new to this.

I see other adapter/couplers but not the M42 "male" to 52 "female" unless I am not recognizing it

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Dennis,

The term "adapter" is sometimes used where "step ring" is more usual. Is this Ebay item what you need?

You want the one which goes into your M42 bellows, right?

Note that's M42, 42 x 1mm
and not T2 42 x 0.75
and not 42mm filter thread which is one of the fione ones.

So you need a M42 to 52mm filter ring, like item 360331162800 for a cheap one. But there are lots.
Yes?

Thanks Chris ,

I was told to get M42 male to 52 female adapter

I check that ID you gave but how do I know if its male to 52 female and not vice versa or male to male?

cheers

Your bellows are M42 female, yes? (ie not a camera bayonet)
So you need a M42 male to 52 Filter female
Then a step ring (Camera end is always quoted first) 52mm filter female step down to 43mm filter for the Raxnox.

Unless your 52mm thread is the other way round, but I doubt it is....

No that's correct I checked the other ring:
which shows a big male thread on it!

XXX Male to YYY Female means those are threads on the thing, not what it fits.

Not always. It depends on who is selling. However, most Ebay listings describe what each thread permits you to do.

I don't believe I've seen a step ring quoted any other way by a vendor who knows what he's doing.
Obviously, random M42 etc adapters can be used in any orientation depending on application, but if it says step up or step down for filter ring threads, it's camera first.
