Microscope Video Processing Application

Post by Lucy H »

Hi,
I’m a sixth form student and I’m doing a project on creating a video processing application to use with a microscope. At the moment I am doing research into the type of features that I could include and I thought it would be a good idea to ask people who use microscopes if they had any ideas. Some thoughts I have had so far are to do with changing the colour range of the video so that the features of the image are more distinct and possibly tracking the movement of microorganisms or using shape recognition to count the number of them in the frame. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of processing microscope images and if they found any features that are particularly useful? Or if they had any ideas as to features that they would like to use but haven’t been able to find yet?
Thanks

Lucy, welcome to the forum! This is a friendly and helpful community, so I'm a bit surprised that no one has responded to you yet. I'm not going to be of much help, since I'm not a microscopist and don't shoot much video, but we certainly have forum members who fit the bill. If you don't get replies, it may be that our videomicroscopists haven't seen your post. In that case, you might want to page through our gallery "Photography through the microscope," take note of the folks posting links to their videos, and send a few of them a private message.

I'll throw an idea into the ring, though it's probably not what you're looking for, as it's not a video processing issue, but a motion-control one. Looking at very good videos, such as fpelectronica's Chlamydodon, the videographer has had to adjust the x/y movement on his microscope, to keep the creature from swimming out of the frame. Even in the hands of a skilled operator, this movement tends to be a bit rough. The addition of servo motors, a joystick, a controller box, and accompanying software might be a big help.

Hopefully, other members will give you better ideas. Good luck!

I work with microscopes a great deal but do very little video, and I am not involved with image or video analysis. You are likely far more familiar with what is currently being done.... but just in case you haven't looked over these sites there may be some thoughts and ideas to be gleaned:

Some techniques, such as "people counting" analysis, are not intended for microscopes but there may well be some ideas derived from these efforts:
