Dynamic range of DLSR

Post by chinkin »

Perhaps this is a naïve question, but can someone tell me how to find or calculate the dynamic range for a DSLR? The dynamic range is always given for CCD cameras (used for microscopy) but I've not been able to find it for DSLR's (specifically the Canon EOS 5D MK II). I'd like to compare this spec for the Canon with various CCD camera's.

Thanks.

While the Canon 5D Mkii can digitize to 14 bits, the dynamic range is given at around 11.7 EV, or 70.2 db. This is because dynamic range is actually limited by sensor noise. A Google search for Canon 5D will bring up many articles regarding dynamic range.

Roger N. Clark has measured the dynamic range of the 5D Mark II for a range of ISO values.
