Weevil Time Killing

Nuthin exciting, just killing time and trying different things with a weevil from a sweep last summer. Possibly a Larinus carlinae.

Face view at 7x, 64 steps at 30µm. Canon 5D MK IV, MPE 65mm and 1.4 extender.

Side view at 7x, 49 steps at 30µm. Canon 5D MK IV, MPE 65mm and 1.4 extender.

Interesting how they can tuck in their antennae. 8x, 89 steps at 10µm. Canon 30D, Sigma 70-300 at 200mm and Zeiss 10x infinity objective.

Antenna out with a little coaxing via rehydration/relaxing. 8x, 292 steps at 5µm. Canon 30D, Sigma 70-300 at 200mm and Zeiss 10x infinity objective.

Weevil tarsi at 12x, 241 steps at 5µm. Canon 30D, Sigma 70-300 at 300mm and Zeiss 10x infinity objective. Best shot I could get before I relaxed the specimen.

Relaxed tarsi at 12x, 95 steps at 5µm. Canon 30D, Sigma 70-300 at 300mm and Zeiss 10x infinity objective.

Beautiful images. I personally like the pre relaxed tarsi. The extremities frame it very well. Just a question, did you lose the antenna on the off camera side when you relaxed it and pried the antenna out of the grove? Thanks for sharing.

No, the other antenna is still there in its recessed position just in case I need another close-up. I did another weevil with both antennae out after relaxation.

A cheap ultrasonic cleaner (though they have doubled/tripled in price from two years ago), distilled water with a drop or two of Jet Dry Finish for about 6ixty seconds and blotted on a coffee filter to absorb the excess water. Then left to air dry under a raised container.

I only have the Zeiss, on the barrel it has: Carl Zeiss Jena Planachromat + 10x/0.20 ∞/-A. Some months ago, someone on this site corrected me that this particular objective requires 250mm for 10x instead of the usual 200mm. My theory, correct or incorrect is 200mm = 8x, 250mm = 10x and 300mm = 12x. Math was never my strong suite. Any advice now or in the future is greatly appreciated. Thanx. Al.

Very good images, the weevil portrait at the first one seems a curios character, I easily can imagine it at the Star Wars tavern.

Correct! Can I trade it for something expensive like a Canon IDx MK III or better? It also came with the stereo microscope, 40x, 50x and 100x objectives plus the trinocular camera attachment and as a bonus the RMS(?) adaptor 52mm for the ungodly sum of $100 Canadian, 10¢ American or 3,135,273. Iranian rial.

Thanx, Pau. So, at 250mm the 40x is 40 (Field Of View 0.5mm), then at 200mm it should be 30x (FOV 0.75mm) based on a Canon 30D camera at 1.6 crop factor?

I'm pretty good at math, but I never trust it without confirmation.

My advice is to spend $10 on a stage micrometer and take a picture of it with the same optics.

I don't have this lens, but it must be good because you take great pictures with it :-)
