Mantis faces

Post by dy5 »

Looking through some older images while doing a backup, these mantis portraits caught my eye. They are from stacks of 10-15 images taken through an Zeiss Stem 11 APO dissecting microscope and processed with software provided by Zeiss (pre-Zerene days). Lighting by fiberoptic light pipes and coffeecup styrofoam pieces for diffusers, which were easy to move around, but not especially effective.

Phyllocrania paradoxa. About 50mm body length. You can guess it's a female by the three very small ocelli, typical of a mantis that doesn't fly much (often females). The head ornament probably aids camouflage.

Otomantis sp. About 30mm body length. These males love to fly and have the large ocelli to go with the lifestyle.
