Delphinium Dark Blue/Dark Bee

Post by Harold Gough »

I was rained off from working outside so I retired to the conservatory.

This is one of the few Delphiniums, in many years, to get to flowering size for us without being eaten by snails. It seems to have two names. The blue colour (my observations) seems to be perceived as purple or blue, depending on whether the light is incident or transmitted, although I don't think it is that clear-cut.

We don't see very many small aperture shots posted in the forums so I gave this the treatment I would have done with film: low ISO and small aperture. It being a fairly dull day, this required a tripod and time delay. E-P2, Leitz Wetzlar Elmarit 60mm macro, 1/3 second f16, ISO 200.

I opened the conservatory door, which was right behind the potted plant, to remove unwanted "bokeh" from raindrops on the window. With a time delay, and occasional quite strong gusts of wind, well, sometimes a tripod can't prevent all the motion blur:

I delete most blurred images but I think that one has merit.

A couple of shots with front lighting, using my Kiron 105mm:

These are outdoor shots but the topic started with ones taken indoors.
