Hoverfly on crocus

Post by LordV »

One of the reasons I like crocuses is that hoverflies like eating the pollen. Episyrphus balteatus munching away.
Hoverfly shots all MPE-65 and with some hand focus stacking.

I admit I have seen hoverflies, but never from closer than about two feet. Brian I think you must be a fly-whisperer.
Astonishing pics.

Thanks Chris for the comments.

As long as you are reasonably careful , hoverflies when feeding like this are fairly easy to approach. I'd also preprepared a bit by putting a house brick near the crocuses so I could rest my hand on it with the camera lens on that.
