Flowering Bog Algae

Post by dbur »

I found a spooky bog in the woods. Entire surface was pink. On closer inspection it looks like flowering algae of some sort. A brief search turned up no similar images on the internet. Am I correct that this is a flowering algae?

Here is a spooky stereo of the pond if you are interested.

Algae don't make flowers, but most aquatic plants do.
In the image it looks like the pond surface is coverd with Lemna sp. and there is at least another plant. The red things could be flowers or other plants, much more detailed pictures would be needed to tell it.

Could be Azolla filiculoides.

Yes does look like Lemna sp. and Azolla filiculoides. They are dispersed so evenly over the whole pond I assumed they must be different parts of the same organism. Of note is other ponds in the same area all have the green one but none of the red one.

I would call it duckweed, which includes the smallest flowering plants. But I don't know what the red ones are.
