Yuk - slimemould

Post by LordV »

Some shots of what i think is the cellular mass of a slime mould Dictyostelium purpureum with the worm like threads inside. All taken at 5:1. I bought a small piece inside to warm up and unlike outside, things started moving. The animations are shots taken around 1 second intervals. First one using flash and the second one using an external light source shining on the surface. Both the whole surface and the worm like things were moving this time in the warmth.

Still not sure if the worm like things are nematodes or similar feeding on the slime mould or cellular slugs of the slime mould itself as it gets organised to sporulate.

I think they are early stages of spore-bearing structures (sorocarps - not a typo!), prior to spore development but I don't know these organisms.

Thanks Harold and DeVil for the comments and info :)

Harold must admit I'm leaning towards them being part of the slime mould - never seen blunt ended or open ended nematodes.

Very good and very interesting, nice even in winter you manage to find good subjects.
