Has anyone had a chance to try the above lens as tube?
It seems to me that the extending design might allow for larger usable range as tube lens than the old internal zooms. On the other hand, there is the distinct possibility of zoom creep in vertical setup.
The optical construction is also a lot less complex than in the old ones. Part of it is likely the extending design, but part could be distortion correction. So those could be a problem.

No answers ... so I went to shop and tested it along with EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM III. There was no appreciable difference between the two. At max zoom, there was just a hint of black at corners and then it got progressively worse when focal length was reduced. This was with full frame. It should work down to 135...150mm with APS-C. The transition from light to dark is rather fast - at least I didn't notice any normal vignetting. I thought about crop mode too late to try with that.
