I'm careful to ground everything. I try to keep my environment <20V/m and <3mG per WHO recommendations.

I recently bought a TEAC reel to reel at an estate sale. After some refurbishing (new belt, etc) I started using it before checking the EMF levels. It was radiating >500V/m, which is unusually high and I'm not sure the source, but after grounding the chassis it is now at ~0V and sounds superb.

What instrumentation do you use to measure these aspects?

I use a TriField TF2 EMF monitor. It has a 3-axis magnetic field detector so orientation within the magnetic field is not critical. I actually have 5 of them!

Interesting device -- thanks for the pointer!

Indeed it is an indispensible instrument if you are interested in measuring and controlling EMF in your environment, avoiding high EMF, etc. I've been using them for 5 years now and have developed quite a lot of expertise. It was a much longer learning curve than I expected, with many twists and turns, especially for magnetics.
