White-Tailed Deer Winter Hairs

Post by Olympusman »

On the mountain where we live, it is estimated there are about 60 White-Tailed Deer per square mile, so we get to observe them intimately and have a few does who observe us (when that guy will put out the bird food).
I have observed that these deer have a tawny reddish summer coat, but in the winter they turn gray. From a sample I took a few years ago I found that in the winter these deer grow hollow tubular hairs for insulation against the cold.
When spring comes, they shed this gray coat for the summer coat, and if you are in deer country in the USA, these tufts of winter fur should be all over the place.

Very interesting image, never seen a hair like this before.
A project with diffent hairs from the zoo is still on my micro-bucketlist.

Best regards,

Walter
