Thanks, I liked the DIC image better as well. This was my first attempt using Phase with my newly acquired Nikon DIC Achr/Apl 1.35 DIC condenser. Those are the true colors on both images but I did 'smooth' out the background considerably with the stamp tool and to get rid of all the dust motes. There was no hue or saturation used. The phase reminded my of anoptral phase setup used on my PZO Bioilar.

Your photos are a good comparison of two observation techniques. I wondered for a long time which shot is nicer in my opinion. Finally, I chose DIC. This technique gives more elegant effects.
Some time ago I scraped off some stone residue and observed many diatoms in a bright field. But it was a failure. DIC or Ph are much better
