Thanks Guys-- Yes, the purplish dots are the staph, about 1 um in diameter. The clusters are characteristic. So that nobody gets disgusted, these are all smears....no picture of the actual "source" of the specimen or anything...there are 3 different stains here...the first is the traditional Gram stain (crystal violet, iodine, safranin 0). Hi Ken--- LOL, its definitely cold here in the NW...(are you suggesting the Lacrymaria has a case of "surf proboscis"?)...but in this case it's not cold but all the nasty things I was doing to the beastie that made it contract and stay that way...shortly after this picture the Lacrymaria disintegrat...

Hi Ken--

Those are excellent wet mount spore micrographs. Please post more, there's not a lot known about many of these species. You can also try letting a small sample sit in some diliuted aqueous stain (like methylene blue) and then washing and making a squash prep.

You may also want to check out the background subtraction options in imageJ. I am not too familiar with marine ciliates, but it could be something like an Aspidisca or a Discomorphella... I hope its the latter...they do like to live in fairly anoxic environments.
