Neurosis,

Brian, In regard to materials salvaged from an old laptop. You've mentioned in another thread: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8783&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60 I'm using the "diffuser" sheet on the front of my coke can and the thinner dispersion sheet directly on the flas...

I did some more playing around today, same house sparrows. As previously discussed, the preflash is a problem; but there is an easy workaround/feature and today that workaround seemed to work for most shots when using E-TTL II. The workaround does not apply when using the flash in Manual Mode. I too...

Thanks Arron, Compared to the Rufus Fantail (at the link in your reply) the house sparrows certainly are sluggush ! When using a Canon, FEL = FE Lock (flash exposure lock). When in E-TTL II, press the camera's <FEL> button, or in my case on the Canon 50D the <*> button and the speedlight will fire a...

Not Macro but interesting example.

Just an observation........ Not much of an image and definitely not macro ; but is relevant when photographing smaller subjects too. When I focused this image the sparrow in the viewfinder had its wings down. When I had finished taking the image the sparrow still had its wings down and appeared to b...

Harold, Here is screenshot of more images of the same insect that might be helpful for the purposes of ID. It is some type of Stilt-legged Fly? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micropezidae but most likely Telostylinus lineolatus , Banana Stalk Fly http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/138_long_...

Rik, The 'ring pattern' in the eye...I suspect that part of the eye is out of focus or it could be the angle from which I took the image? 100% crop of that area below. Diffuser consisted of a foil lined, almost eliptical container, with LCD light dispersion film (mirror side facing outward, faint li...

Banana Stalk Fly (something with long legs)

Playing with diffusers again... and trying to keep cool (very hot in Oz). Sat down on a bench under some gum trees; this guy had the same idea, so I took a few images. Here is one of those images. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/138_long_legs_1.jpg Canon 50D, Canon 100mm USM Macro, 1/1...

Mark,

Love the 'eye-lashes' on the Lady Bug!

There appears to be significant depth of field in the third image.

Found this earlier post in the forum after doing a search for information related to flash sync speed and have ' bumped ' it to the surface. (good info and links). Also, I was reminded today about testing flash sync speed via an entry in the Strobist Blog: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2010/01/know-y...

Brian, Thanks for the info :smt002 . The dispersion sheet is odd; hold it one way and it splits the light source into two beams; hold it another way and you get one extended beam as though the flash head has been stretched . :smt119. BAT, I kinda of figured it was a fly of some sort :smt003 but I do...
