I think this is a endospore-forming Bacillus. Cfr.: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/99/Bacteriology_4.png Franz Thank you Franz, Googling endospore forming bacillus provides a great deal of information. It is possible that the endospore (possibly/probably the bulbous end of the baci...

Hi Martin,

I encountered these microbes for only a couple of days around April 24, 2009, and have never seen them in my rain water barrel since then. If I find them again I will study them at 1000x with oil. I hope there will be further replies.

Good observing to you,

Thomas

Unidentified large bacteria

http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/75_Unidentified_bac_Ashcraft2_1.jpg I found some large bacteria (I think they are bacteria?) in my outdoor rainwater barrel. They have one end that is bulbous and they appear to swim in a spiral motion. I have searched the internet for general bacteria ...

Hi Rik,

Very interesting analysis. Neat.

I think my Canon S3 IS will also shoot movies at 60 fps. When I come across action like this in the future maybe I will switch into faster mode to see what's there.

Vorticella : Post separation stalk contraction movies

Hi Microscopists. Inspired by Charlie's Vorticella stalk and myoneme images I am posting links to a couple of movies of Vorticallas separating from their stalks with the stalks then contracting right after separation. http://www.heliotown.com/Vorticellas_Detaching_from_the_Stalk.html Tom in New Mexico

Olivier,

Quite interesting. Thanks for posting. Some people think bacteria are boring in the light microscope but in reality they are pretty dynamic. I hope to see more bacteria images in the forum.

Hi Charlie,

That is a glorious organism. This pic should be in National Geographic.

The more I live with microbes the more respectful I become of all living creatures, no matter their size. Rotifers, to me, are like little people in their way. Little spirits with full and complex lives.

Hi Ralf,

Fine movie. Thanks. Water fleas seem to have good strong hearts as they last a long time time in my sample jars.
