Interesting picture. I get a similar occurrence in my freezer when freezing ice cubes. Each top tray in the stack will often have one or two sharp spikes extending upwards about an inch or so from the tray. Very strange.

Definitely a Camponotus species. however they are no where near as destructive as termites. Keep in mind termites actually eat the wood, the ants dont. Also few species actually even nest in wood a great many of the species are ground nesters

I think the antenna are an illusion It reminds me of the seeds I used get from an Oxalis plant. See figure 25 on the linked image.

Very nice. My first thought was that these were a Solenopsis, but upon counting the segments in the antennal club and seeing spines on the thorax I agree they are a Pheidole species.

Nice shots. The large ant is a Ponerine ant, looks to be the genus Rhytidoponera, the male is almost certainly the same genus. The smaller ants are probably genus Iridomyrmex.

Neat shots, those darn things will nest anywhere they can. I have noticed the lower than normal populations as well. I think it is likely due at least in part to much reduced food supplies. It has been so dry that the food sources have been drastically reduced, meaning less brood can be cared for.

Neat bug, a foot/leg count will help with the Ident. I only see two legs in the photo. The head also does not look quite right for it to be a millipede. I am thinking beetle larvae based on that.
