Outstanding images. But allow me one question: where were these shot (also Danum Valley)? I just ask because you named the Neocollyris species. I have collected many during my numerous expeditions to Asia and know that these critters are a fairly speciose group and not easy to identify. BTW - how di...

In fact, it is a chrysidid, genus Cleptes.

I agree, very nice shots!

Fred, the size is not much help in this case as these critters are quite variable. I will not be in my lab till monday where I have all necessary literature. As far as I remember they may be separated by the punctation of the fore body.

Or Poecilus cupreus. Definitely one of the two. I do not know right now how to separate the two species.

Yes, that is Erodius. I will not try to ID the species as I know that Erodius is a difficult genus. OTOH, there should not be too many candidates for the Spanish fauna. Experience has also taught me that Mediterranean tenebs are quite variable, so identifying species from a photo is always tricky. C...

Very good close-ups. I would like to see that quality in scientific papers. However, this is definitely not Timarcha, not even a chrysomelid. The shape of the head and antennae clearly points towards Tenebrionidae (maybe Erodius sp.). Do you have an image showing the entire beetle? Does not need to ...

Very nice field shots! However, the first 5 images are not true weevils but Fungus Weevils (Anthribidae). Only the last one is a true weevil.

With this size, it can only be P. melanarius, very common in C-Europe.

Very nice! The 2nd is a substantial improvement. Difficult to ID without seeing the whole beetle but looks very much like a Carabid, possibly Feronia nigrita ; sometimes placed in the genus Pterostichus . Pterostichus nigrita is a good starting point. The specimen size would already help to narrow d...

Phyllobius is definitely correct, but I am afraid, the species cannot be identified with certainty from a photograph, at least not in this perspective. There are too many similar looking ones, and the scales are not reliable, because they might be riven off (which is clearly the case here).

Jeff, I already saw the original pic over at mindat. Your last posted version is already excellent. It is always a headache when shooting micros with all those highly lustrous quarz and pyrite xls in the matrix because the specular highlights they produce usually distract from the actual centre of i...

What a shot! Seldom seen something comparable quality wise.

BTW - I never recognized that the eyes of these flies have differently sized ommatidia ventrally vs dorsally.
