In which way do the macros achieve 1:1. If its by shortening focal length I guess they would be doing that by shortening their focal length and extending the optical group as has been suggested?

So does this mean a 200mm macro lens focused at infinity on 200mm extension would provide more WD than when it's focused at 1:1?

I guess the extension combo would be inferior in quality?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe adding a teleconverter changes the focal length of the lens or the working distance. Doesn't it just divergently magnify the (focused) image presented to it and then present a (focused) magnified image to the sensor? It converts the 200mm into a 28...

Longest working distance lens @ 1:1 range?

What is the longest high quality objective for photographing bugs/insects at 1:1. The combo I have been using is 1.4TC+Nikon 200mm macro. Any way of achieving longer working distance without increasing the TC mag??

Thanks for the comments :) I2oBin - I'm not bothered about flash reflections as long as they are not blown. Virtually impossible to avoid them with a black shiny surface unless you use cross polarisation techniques. Brian V. Still using your CC can Brian? I know it would be hard to meter this l'bird.

I thonk the flash need more diffusion. Composition and subjects work. BG on 2nd one is a bit distracting.

Yes they do and can walk on water - may springtail species actually live on water surfaces. Not sure if the pic below will help to scale them - they are on a water barrel lid about 18" in diameter and the raised mouldings (the reflective stripes) are 10mm long. There's around 50 springtails in this p...
