Diatom Strew Musings

Some interesting stuff found in prepared diatom strew slides. No stacking, all single exposure.

Re: Monochromatic Microscopes?

I've tried some of those objectives, and a friend owns a bunch of them. Some are unwieldy beasts, extremely heavy and mounting is far from trivial. I tried out a 5x Zeiss something, it was huge, threadless, shaped like a fat bowling pin. My friend uses some sort of collar to mount them. Definitely a...

Re: 60x Frankenobjectiv identification

Interesting stuff. If this is coming out of a machine, it makes more sense that it is a dry lens instead of an immersion lens? I'm sure you have tried that, but you never know. Might be part of a micro UV fluorescent detector in chromatography, with a quench of the direct light. Must be a micro cel...

A year of microscopy progress!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope 2021 is nicer to us all. Here's my year's progression in diatom microscopy. From brightfield observation, to phase contrast, to DIC, and back to brightfield. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50784455031_15ff665cf2_h.jpg Little more info here: https://flic.kr/p/2knDBb...

Re: microscope reccommendations

I read a bit into the optiphot. It's a very capable machine and I won't regurgitate the other comments. As stated, I don't see a reason to "replace" it with a BH2 or BHS. To me, it has an even bigger lamphouse, higher wattage. Likewise, you can easily adapt a high power halogen lamp by collimating t...

Olympus IX parts

I have 2 surplus parts for Olympus IX inverted infinity microscopes. Currency USD. Auspost express+insurance, buyer pays it. Open to negotiations. IX-ADUCD $400 Universal condenser (U-UCDB, U-UCD8 etc) adaptor. Allows the universal condenser to be used on an IX microscope. Clean optics and mechanica...

Re: Diff between Mitu M Plan Apo 5x at 100mm and Mitu QV 2.5x

Hello Daniel! Thanks a lot for the info! So, if I have the Mitu 5x and 10x, then I do not need QV 2.5x except HR. Did I understand you correctly? BTW, do the HR lenses belong to the QV series? Best, ADi Hi ADi, that would be correct. The QVs are not flat field either, they probably use the small tu...

Re: Zeiss / Motic condenser

How is Motic's Olympus compatible Abbe Condenser? It has slider inserts which are interesting. Considering a new unit is about $30 more expensive than a used Olympus one, it seems attractive.

Re: Insert for the Olympus phase condenser

I have the U-PCD condenser, which is just a BH2 reskin with phase contrast annuli suitable for UIS. I'll give it a go if there's more slots. I do have another interesting project/proposal. Olympus' U-UCDB and U-UCD8 condensers allow a slider inserted into the polariser slider. tint.jpg The approxima...

Re: Diff between Mitu M Plan Apo 5x at 100mm and Mitu QV 2.5x

Theoretically they should be the same if the 2.5x you're looking at isn't the HR variant. The 2.5x HR trumps the 5x at 5x or shrunk to 2.5x due to the significantly higher NA.

Re: Jamin Lebedeff contrast

Zeiss made a Jamin Lebedeff Interference Contrast set. It is commonly referred to "classical interference microscopy". I believe Anne is using this set, as I saw the post elsewhere.

Lovely images, I love the colours!

Re: 60x Frankenobjectiv identification

This is really weird. AFAIK resolution is limited by the aperture and the phase annulus is limiting the aperture, so what's the purpose of a high magnification oil objective with a so tiny annulus?. I can't imagine it being designed for normal microscope work. Must be intended for an specific devic...

Re: 60x Frankenobjectiv identification

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50762596971_93057c8bbc_h.jpg Results are in. What the absolute? I cannot really comprehend this result. Brightfield is basically unusable, it is washed out beyond belief, requires a lot of post-processing applied contrast to be usable. RS3, CS10, CS40, and CS20, ...

60x Frankenobjectiv identification

Some time ago, I obtained a weird OEM 60x oil immersion objective. I'll call it the 60xO because I'm lazy. The objective uses the same shell as those weird Nikon 20x objectives. More on that when I'm bothered. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50535715603_f0cf41bf2c_h.jpg The seller claimed it was...

Re: Another questionable eBay listing

That looks like a Zoerk MFS M42>M39 adapter ring, I would bet it is! Yes, looks like it, here is a reference. Zrk.jpg That image was probably lifted off google image search in the first place. Why else would it have a random M42>M39 adapter? Yep, very very common. There's many sellers on Taobao doi...
