lighting cage with CAMVATE clamps and arms

I have recently been watching a lot of Allan Walls Photography on YouTube (some links below). One series that particularly interested me was about his lighting cage, which is basically a cube of rigid plastic pipe to which one can attach lots of other stuff using small clamps and articulating arms. ...

Re: Unable to get crisp images with amScope clone

Duveral, welcome aboard. I have downloaded and studied the image at https://ibb.co/VQSS87D (image URL https://i.ibb.co/WPyy1bF/CFAB98-D4-4967-4-DB1-9-F77-C7-C20-BB78858.jpg ). What I see does not make me think that you have a bad lens. Image quality at the center of the frame looks OK, and more impo...

Re: Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 S Focus Breathing = 49mm FL at 1x

One interesting thing I noticed was the FL change from 103mm to 49mm at 1x. Focus breathing is funny stuff. Common descriptions, such as at https://photographylife.com/focus-breathing , imply that changing FL is the cause of focus breathing. But on the other hand, changing FL in exactly the right w...

Re: jumping spider portraits

Thanks. Yes, T1i. Sometimes we forget that if these cameras do not fail catastrophically, they generally degrade quite slowly. This particular body has a 15 megapixel APS-C sensor, pixel pitch 4.69 micron pixels, that gives almost the same image quality that it did when new. Using the Nikon rule of ...

Re: knot of striped hair

Perhaps it's my ageing eyes, I very much prefer the Flipped view. As you say better aesthetics, but for me its seems more depth of field together with a better "true reflection" of 3D appearance. That's very interesting! My best guess is that the difference is something to do with the apparent dire...

Re: knot of striped hair

Here is a version that has been tweaked for better esthetics: flipped vertical so the "tails of the bow" point downward, and with background masked to black in those troublesome overlap areas where background is always covered by some OOF blur from the subject so it develops a hazy glow. https://jan...

Re: Customs Taxes The Shipper $500 in Tax on a Lens

OK, thanks.

So, I think I'm hearing that DHL just messed up and prepared the paperwork incorrectly so as to trigger customs fees that could have been legally avoided.

Do I have that right?

Re: Customs Taxes The Shipper $500 in Tax on a Lens

I'm almost totally clueless about customs taxes. But I am curious... Was there some way that the paperwork could have been prepared, that would have avoided customs tax being paid to Japan? Or is this a case where Japan would have demanded the customs tax in any case, and the only question is who pa...

knot of striped hair

Recently the forum has had some illustrations and discussion of hairs with cloudy centers ( HERE and HERE ). It happens that I have quite a lot of that stuff. This sample seems typical of what I've seen through microscopes since I was a kid -- a broad flattened strand, dark on the sides and light in...

Re: Mitutoyo objective clones

I would like to build my own objective with off the shelf parts that is similar to performance with Mitutoyo. I admire your ambition! But to put some issues in perspective... Inside a Mitutoyo objective there are roughly a half-dozen lens elements. Each of those has a different front curvature, rea...

Re: Thorlabs SM2 Parts Available From China

SM2 is just easier to remember, rather than 2.035"-40. My curiosity is overwhelming. Normally a thread diameter will be some nice round number, either in the units where it is specified or in some original units that have been converted. But I can't see where 2.035" fits that pattern. So, how on ea...

Re: RAW-Tiff what happens to the ISO value?

Turning up the brightness setting in raw development is essentially telling the conversion process to imagine that the image had been shot with a higher ISO setting, and you want it to estimate the pixel values that would have produced by that higher ISO, given the same amount of light. The result m...
