Remove ratchet on Hejnar rail with Mitutoyo micrometer?

Just got a Hejnar 25 mm micrometer rail with the 20% off Memorial Day sale. :D The Mitutoyo micrometer screw has a ratchet at the end, but as the torque forces to move the stage are much higher than for micrometer measurement applications, it is useless. I can unscrew it to make the whole device a b...

Thanks Rik! I knew you would have a good answer! That things are not perfectly linear, that is absolutely clear. I hope I will see a decent speed up from 6 to at least 18 (or even rumored 32 cores) on a new Mac Pro. Batch running DxO and Zerene at the same time pretty much puts the computer to a cra...

Zerene stacking with multicore processors? limits, configs?

Apple just launched its now iMacPro with up to 18 cores. Can Zerene use all of those cores? I looks to me as if Zerene can use them, but would be nice to know before buying. Are number of cores and RAM correlated or independent? I currently use a MacPro 2013 (can) with 6 cores and 32GB RAM to stack ...

UV reflectance z-stacking

I've been playing around with UV reflectance z-stacking. Some may find it interesting to see where the issue are and how to overcome them. Hardware: Canon 5D2, modified to full spectrum. MP-E 65: works, but about 10x (3stop) lower transmission and seems to cut off at a longer wavelength. Nikon EL 80...

No pictures yet, will follow up with that in the next couple of days. I don't think it is chromatic aberration. The purple/yellow is not a fringe (seen that Leica scopes), but a solid area. Re short wave cut-off, I would think that regular (non quartz) glass in filters and fibre optics should cut of...

Thanks for your replies. Promoted some reading on prism polarizers. Interesting, but possibly a bit overkill on my application. The LED light source is remarkably color stable, and intensity adjustments have close to zero effect on color temperature, I checked that with a Minolta colormeter III. Tha...

epi cross polarization purple highlights

I've just been fiddling with using cross-polarization to cut specular highlights from EtOH-wet preserved flowers under a Zeiss Discovery V20 with planapo 1.5x. Flowers are not submerged, but EtOH wet, so a worst-case for highlights. Analyzer on lens is from Zeiss, polarizers on Zeiss LED fibre optic...

The MPE 65 can be used with TC 1.4x for sure (have done that, to 7:1 on FF camera body), and should also work with TC 2.0x (to 10:1 on FF body). There are the usual caveats such as losing 1-2 f-stops, additional joint in set-up. You can also add additional extension rings if you really want to. On t...

I would worry about a lot of other things first. That includes: - air movement in room. - Breathing of operator. - stability of floor. - stability of camera support when moving rig and changing center of gravity. - Heat induced motion of specimen from illumination sources. The whine is at a pretty h...

Rik: thanks for the info on rotation calibration. Obviously, I had not RTFM. Chris R: have to see whether I have enough clearance for a clip, or may have to move scope to the edge of the table. Re WD, so I will give my existing 10x/0.3 with 2 mm WD a try. Re diffusion, thanks for emphasizing that. w...

Chris: thanks for the detailed explanations. Interesting note re error in manufacturers' data. That certainly calls for some ground truthing. One thing I still have to figure out, but not that hard either, is what the nominal interval defined in the Zerene-Stack-Shot interface will generate one turn...

For capturing/representing 3D structure, consider whether stereo might be helpful. Zerene Stacker can construct good stereo from a single stack, when shot at high magnification and wide NA as in your application. See http://www.zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker/docs/syntheticstereo for starters. --Rik ...

I ran my copy recently through a f/2.8 vs 4.0 series from 1:1 to 5:1 on a 5DsR, so same pixel size as 7D. For me 2.8 was always sharper. See post on that topic in this section of forum
