It's one thing to set exposure manually on a lens that the markings on the aperture ring are the actual effective aperture. I've no problem with that and I do still have a good handheld exposure meter if I need it. But quite a different thing if the lens is on a bellows and every change in bellows e...

I don't think he got it mixed up with focus. He's one that's very insistant that photography is done with manual settings for exposure. But shoots AF. He was very clear in what he was saying. As I said, he's not a macro shooter except maybe some product photography. I do most of my high magnificatio...

The Sony a850 and a900 both are crippled in A mode to run only with chipped lenses in that mode. Yes there is still A mode with that limitation. The Sony a700 (which pretty much copied and updated the Minolta 7D) was the last to be able to set exposure without a chipped lens. And it went out of prod...

Yes I mean aperture priority, where you set the aperture (if the equipment has the ability to set that) and the camera metering reads the light coming in and sets the shutter speed. On Sony/Minolta cameras this is marked as A on the dial. Note there is also the alternative in flash control where wit...

Exposure Metering/setting
Recently I was told that Canon plans to phase out automatic exposure (A Mode) working with anything other than their chipped lenses. Sony has already done this, Some Nikon cameras as well. The idea being that we all can just set exposure manually for everything else. I was flat out told that everyon...

Some nice angles there! :D What a strange lens! Would a ring flash get light where you need it? The 1x-3x is equipped with mounting grooves for the Minolta 1200 Macro Ringflash. And yes it lights quite well with that setup. There is also a slide copying stage that matches up with the lens. It, too,...

6" Vinyl Ruler 10-Count (05145, 05150, 05146, 05142, 09242, 05160, 05220) It was a couple years ago I last ordered, but that appears to be the same as what I ordered. I also ordered one of their right angle rulers, but that's not seen much use. At the time I ordered a fair supply so it will be a lo...

Re: Rulers and scale bars
Indeed, using rulers does get in the way of my photographs. There is the DOF issue, and my rulers set off horrible glare. On the business of glare and rulers the crime scene rulers are matte finish and come in several shades, at least the ones I found were like that. I keep a few of each shade in m...

Walt with your experience with all of these similar macro lenses, are there any particularly stellar performers to keep an eye out for? It really depends on what you are photographing. As has been noted each of these lenses has a fairly limited range of magnification for which it's designed. So it ...

The OM 38mm bellows lens that I have has the same arrangement. RMS thread and stunning glass. There were a few versions made. The original RMS manual versions were single coated, then there was a multicoated RMS version and then the design was changed to those that Rik owns. Mine are single coated ...

I thought this was a bit odd (no click stops) but figured it was due to the ancient design of the lens. Can I take it your is the same? My Olympus 20mm is the same, except the ring movement is smooth and will not unscrew the lens. The 38mm is more interesting as it has two rings, one is a stop ring...

Re: Wasp sting, Olympus 20/3.5 bellows lens
Also a lot of the time my shots are soft and I think I'm suffering from some extraneous light bouncing into lens from my flash setup I have an assortment of these micro bellows lenses, including the two Olympus ones. I first ran into them in a scientific photography course over 40 years ago and hav...

How to mount a microscope objective on a bellows?
For a slightly less quick and dirty method, use a body cap. Preferably black and soft plastic. Drill a hole through the center just slightly under the screw thread diameter so the threads will bite. Screw the objective into that and attach it to your bellows.
