I think it would help if you would specify the desired FOV rather than the desired magnification. A subject that needs 2x on a crop sensor needs 3x on the FF sensor. Is there a reason you specifically ask about 2x on both kinds of sensors? If you have a specific FOV in mind, then you can play with ...

Highest Resolution at About 2x
What are considered the highest resolution objectives or lenses to shoot at about 2x (DX or Full frame)? I have searched the site and have found a lot about shooting at 2x but some of it seems conflicting and some of it might be dated. I am currently using a 2x Mitutoyo (mounted on a 200mm Mitutoyo ...

Interesting... My work is mostly photographing micro mineral crystals. My set up is similar to Chris S's "Bratcam", which is documented on this site, and my 200mm tube lens is an exact clone of his, and built according to the details he provided on here. I have been pretty satisfied with it for the ...

My 300mm lens has an 82mm filter thread but I have already found the items I need to mount a Mitutoyo objective to it, and have ordered them. Thank you for the reply. I have a 300mm Nikon ED AF F:4 lens so I will give it a try. I will need to search Amazon and/or Ebay to find the equipment to mount ...

Thank you for the information. I have only played around a bit using the D850 for micro work at this point, and have not "officially" made the change from DX yet. I have not used the totally silent mode for stacking yet but will try it out. I have tried the built in stacking program at 1:1 (with the...

Thank you for the reply. I have a 300mm Nikon ED AF F:4 lens so I will give it a try. I will need to search Amazon and/or Ebay to find the equipment to mount the Mitty objectives to the front of the lens, but that should be fairly simple and inexpensive. I would encourage you to stop thinking of mag...

Thinking of switching from Nikon DX to FX (Full Frame)
I have been using Nikon DX cameras (currently a D7200) for my micro work for several years now, but am thinking of switching to Nikon FX (full frame). I use Mitutoyo objectives (2x, 5x, 10x, and 20x) with a 200mm tube lens. I have toyed around a bit with my new full frame D850 and the 5x and up Mitu...

The scratch on the front element of my objective is too fine to accurately apply black paint to, without also getting it on the undamaged glass surface. I wonder if the Sharpie would work ... perhaps the black would stick to the damaged area of the scratch and any excess on the undamaged glass would...

Very Interesting post! I have a 10x Mitutoyo M plan APO (purchased new) that I scratched the front element of when I had an accident photographing a micro mineral on a quartz matrix. The scratch is smaller than the chips on the lens you are talking about here, but it is near the center of the elemen...

When do you apply sharpening when running a stack?
When do you apply sharpening when running a stack of exposures? I use Zerene Stacker and have always applied sharpening after I have run the stack (I use the unsharp mask on photoshop). I am wondering if anybody has experimented with applying the sharpening before running the stack (perhaps via a ba...

This is because in a microscope the primary image (the image projected by the objective) is calculated to form at the internal eyepiece field aperture (the black rond circle you see while looking through the eyepiece). In most microscopes this is placed 10mm below the tube end. The total tube lengh...

According to Thom Hogan's Complete Guide to the Nikon D800/D800E , There's nothing you have to do to enable chromatic aberration correction on the D800 models; it's done automatically when you shoot JPEG and TIFF images. If you use Capture NX2 for NEF conversion, it, too, can do lateral chromatic a...

Finite Objectives: I have wondered about this !
For a 160mm finite objective, I have never understood why it is recommended that the distance should be 150mm from the base of the objective to the sensor plane of the camera. The objective is designed to be used on a microscope with 160 mm tube length, so why is the recommended distance on a camera...

Thanks for posting this. I am just making the jump from finite to infinite objectives and am still using a micro nikkor 200mm as my tube lens, but am interested in finding out about alternatives. Aso: I am wondering If the CA removal is "automatic" when you use the D800E to shoot a JPEG file, or doe...
