Here is a nice article about reduction in an unperturbed rain forest area that is open access. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0185809 In this case put down to rising temperatures (about 2 degrees). I have noticed it a lot in the Pyrenees in Spain, where I do not kn...

Wonderful capture, those teeth are frighteningly sharp, and so fine, it looks like they would do no damage at all but are deadly efficient anyway :).

In biological sciences at least there tend to be more women until postdoc level, and then the ratios tend to reverse. Therefore perhaps the dearth has less to do with the biology of insect pics, but the artistic side. There was a theory that there were more male artists, and that art was an expressi...

Many thanks for the comments, much appreciated. Andy 5? I could see three? I guess an aphid just behind the petal of the flower, some kind of true bug further to the right and a little down and a small fly on the flower at the bottom right of the frame, but will see if i can find the original to hav...

Many thanks for the explanation, and the headsup about affinity, i will have to have a look at that. I also use an A7ii, and prefer Ubuntu, so very useful. I must admit i do not like the view finder too much on the sony, it does not work great at full magnification in bad lighting, too much of a sli...

Great shots and very interesting story. Hybridization would be interesting, not only for one species declining but for the birth of another. It also sets a question about the current classification, is it certain that white tips represent another subspecies (or whatever the definition would be if th...

Wonderful shots all. I hope there were no unwelcome surprises on the trip, one of our researchers had their car liberated near there a few years back...

Backlit butterflies with flash

I kind of liked these, even though the subject matter was so ordinary. It was a bright sunny day, shooting into the sun with a fill flash. You could see the back light better with a lower flash setting but it lost some of the detail on the camera side, so the compromise left some of the translucency...

Very nice pic Troels. Having taken pics of the Danish species and a number of others i can say this is impressive, because the Danish species is much more lively and skittish than the others i have seen. They are very difficult to get a pic face on, where as other species seem inquisitive and presen...

The lack of noise is impressive as that you managed to take a close up at the distance you did. Must be a good camera ;).

Very effective, and nice DOF. Looks like a great setup. I tried something similar with the LED lights, but could never get enough light for a reasonable DOF.

So almost learnt a couple of new words today. But are the ostioles at approx 30% across and 20 up on the second image (black dot) or are they in the barnacle looking parts which might be some kind of fruiting body where i would more have expected them to be? It would be nice to see a super close up ...

The house centipede is very cool, odd how the head end looks thinner than the tail end. Kind of counter intuitive and unlike other centipedes with those huge feet/teeth and eyes it has.
