I desire high pixel count and density as it is useful for many types of photography, not just macro. I own quite a few macro lenses, including Mitus 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x as well as "normal" lenses. I also own microscopes that I do imaging with - Nikon microphot with DIC and SMZ-U. A larger sensor has r...

I agree Ray and apologise - I didn't mean for this to turn into a bait and switch. My ideal criteria is for a mirrorless, full frame, with focus bracketing for outdoor macro. I'm not sure anything ticks all my boxes, although I am still hopeful the a7Riv will, once 3rd party software allows for focu...

So I guess what I am asking is: What is the best mirrorless systems (camera plus software) available for macro photography, and why? I am talking about a camera kit suitable for outdoors as well as high-mag indoors (eg with Mitutoyo objectives and stackshot/wemacro).

Is this a silly question?

There is no lack of information on lenses for macro. Details about macro-specific abilities of the cameras is difficult to find, and it makes it hard to choose a system.

Mirrorless camera for macro - a7R iv or ... ?

Hi all. After a break from photography, and saving my pennies, I am looking to switch from Canon DSLRs to a mirrorless system. I owned a m43 kit before and liked it, but want a larger sensor. After looking at different alternatives I am still undecided. The Sony a7Riv seems suitable as it has a full...

Thanks Pau.

My microscope knowledge is still hit-and-miss and I couldn't work it out.

Hi Ozelot, It seems to me that your gear is more than sufficient for stacking in the field. The extra pixels (30MP vs 21MP) aren't enough to matter imho and your lenses are good too. The 180mm will give you more working distance but 100mm is quite comfortable also. Have you considered a good quality...

Ray, the a7Riii has a micro USB2 as well as the 3.1 type-C USB (and a HDMI). It's the main reason why I'd pay the extra for the mark 3. https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a7r-iii/sony-a7r-iiiA.HTM (about sixth pic down shows the ports) Just wondering now if the camera can do automatic focus...

Thanks for the replies. I'm almost ready to make the (not inexpensive) change to Sony but have one more question. Can the a7Riii take images for focus stacking in the field without a rail? The Sony PlayMemeories app doesn't work with the a7Riii so I suspect third-party gear/software will be needed, ...

Sony a7Rii (/iii) tethering

I'm considering changing from Canon to Sony but am confused about tethering while the camera shutter is triggered by a rail controller. Currently I use the Canon EOS software and a Stackshot rail. This allows live view and remote camera control and automatic downloading of images to the computer, al...

Thanks Beatsy!

Henry Dalton's works got me thinking about this - quite remarkable. And I see Klaus Kemp has some arranged slides that show scales with iridescence and I guessed them to be some type of dry mount.

Butterfly scale slides

I've seen some (mostly antique) arrangements of butterfly scales around the web, and am curious about the details of how they are made. What's a good fixative and/or mounting media to make a permanent slide? And would the process be different if the colours are due to iridescence? Thanks in advance ...

Sigma SD Quattro cameras

Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about the Sigma Quattro cameras, especially in regards to macro. The distinguishing feature is that they use a Foveon sensor, where instead of an rgb-array each site detects the three colours at different depths. This allows for higher resolution with less pixel...
