I love jumping spiders too! I've used the same trick (giving them prey). Sometimes a tiny drop of water works too...if they stop and take a drink, they will typically stand still for a couple of minutes afterwards.

I should have noted that I now often shoot spiders and insects on white paper. My goal is a really well lit photo of the specimen, rather than a representation of the critter in the wild.
