I'd love to see a cutaway showing what's inside, it looks very ungainly and I imagine holding the thing steady could prove problematic. However, it's nice to see more dedicated gear come along, even if most don't know what it's for. I think it is probably a close relative of the Koheisha bug's eye ...

I can't find a current Canon lens between 20 and 35mm which focuses close  - ?? There's a Tokina 35mm which goes to 1:1 but it's for APS only, so not wide. There's a table somewhere that lists max magnifications with their two extension tubes. Mind these will be at very short working distances...

Re: Hi
Hi, i tried some wide angel macro photography too. I used my 18-55 mm for that together with some extension tubes and +10 lens. But it works not that good. At 18 mm i have to get to close to the object. With 35 mm it works ok but the wide-angel effect istn that much better than with my tamron 90mm ...

Re: Macro wide-angle macro Rig
The easiest way is to use one of the compact cameras that have a "1cm" macro mode with sufficient magnification. Another relatively simple way is to use a wideangle lens on a very short extension tube, for instance I've got the Nikkor AI-s 20/3.5 on the old 5.5mm K1 ring. http://www.dpreview.com/for...

If you think about the field of view the lens is designed for, you're only using tiny part of it (angle) in a macro application, eg when reversed at 5:1. Also the angle of incidence of the rays from the image and object, are way off what it was designed for. EG, if you use a 24mm reversed, it's foc...

BR recommended two old Nikkor 35-70 lenses for reversed macro use http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom_02.html#MF35-70f3.3 I believe the extension due to the butchered zoom helps improve quality in such applications because the sensor comes closer to the min. focus distance position (the lens shou...

Interesting thread :) I once played with a Nikon kit zoom 18-55, and also with the 18-200VR  Qualitywise, the results were best at the wide end (max magnification). Magnification can be increased by inserting an additional extension tube. Moreover, this also seems to improve quality relatively ...

Nikkor AI-s 20/3.5
The old Nikkor AI-s 20/3.5 is reputed to be good for supermacro when reversed. The relatively short FL means that one gets decent magnifications with a relatively short extension, say a set of extension tubes; and it makes a bit more impression of depth in a single shot due to low relative backgroun...

Re: lens resolution reversed
So, the best lenses to reverse are the ones that would have given excellent center resolution (forget the corners!), when focused close. Short macro lenses should qualify here. Regarding non-macro lenses, I gather a close-up diopter lens may be an alternative to the mentioned extension, so that the...

That sounds similar to comparisons that I've made also. One of those is HERE , in a thread that's probably worth re-reading because it's relevant to the current question. Well it was similar, but one'd have to be more persistent in achieving a similar frame (add an extension tube with the DSLR to g...

I used to believe a P&S could not compete with a DSLR for macro. Then I started to notice impressive macro work of some P&S users, and the short exposures used there compared to mine with the D90+Tamron60. Plus the odd perspectives. Then one guy on one forum made a fairly apples-to-apples comparison...

AFAIK there are also Kenko auto extension tubes for the Micro 4/3 system. They might work with the kit zoom for the start. The small sensors of compact cameras should be an advantage regarding handheld macro exclusively in ambient light (allowing shorter exposures than a comparable large-sensor setu...

It is interesting how this topic keeps reappearing. Full-frame vs compacts, full-frame vs crop-frame DSLRs, mFT or Nikon1 vs DSLRs. The practical progress is that it used to be more difficult to compare different lens and sensors at once. With mFT, Nikon 1 or Pentax Q it is possible to compare to DS...

If the inner metal tube screws into the metal mounts at either end,... You never lose hope do you? Whatever the inner tube is made of, it doesn't. It ends before the female mount side. No need to take it apart to see the 5mm gap on the longest tube. I think it is not plastic that flexes. The...
