Good morning Andrew, Thanks for the links. Interesting setup that Graham made. I was thinking along the same lines except using a half nut, (a nut that is split and that can be opened and closed around a threaded rod.) to engage the threaded rod/lead screw. That way I could do a fast Z adjustment th...

Hi Craig, Yeah, the Castel-L is hanging out in the breeze but it does provide a measure of course control. The clamp lever is just part of the locking mechanism for the slide, just On/Off. It is on the slide that I'd like to incorporate the handwheel/screw rod for course control, although a Velmex b...

Hello again...making a bit of progress. Drilled and tapped a 3/8x6x6 inch plate of aluminum for a interface between the sliding rail and the stack shot. After locating and center punching the hole locations, center drill, drill for tap size and tap hole. It is good shop practice to clamp parts prior...

Hi All, Re-reading what Chris suggested about a seperate thread regarding vibration is fine with me. I know the exchange of thoughts and ideas regarding vibration benefited me and I'm sure others greatly. I think Rik's idea to start a new link and refer back to this thread or parts within it would b...

There have been so many discussions on vibration that upon completion of this project I'd like to test the system for vibration. So I think I'll try to find a xyz accelerometer, o'scope and maybe a signal generater. I briefly read the white paper from Melles Griot on the subject too. There would be ...

Bob, Yes I'm still here. I have been taking advantage of the cool weather in the Keys to work on my deck. In fact I was reading over the posts that I had missed just today. Very interesting and I'm learning much. Thank you all. I did order the book you recommended. Also my 416 SS plate is on order. ...

Not at all OT Bob, thanks for asking though. A question. On the operating sequence for the 5D MkII outlined outlined above by Bob, would not number three cause some vibration? Not to put to fine a point on this but I would think that where the slide/camera was located on the column would have some e...

This is all very interesting. There might be a resonance set up in the column by the shutter of the 5D II. If there is, it may be solved not by de-coupling but by changing the resonant frequency of the column. Inserting a sliding mass inside of the column or by filling the column with foam should do...

The steel plate idea gets better all the time. I have a Starret magnetic gage holder that I could quickly incorporate. Drilling/tapping holes in steel isn't too much harder to do than in Al. Most of the stainless steel found here in the Florida Keys is of the 300 series wich is austenitic. Thanks ag...

Hi Andrew, I do have to put in four more inserts. I have an aluminum plate on order that is 1/2x 9x12. This plate will be drilled and tapped for whatever I decide to mount on it. Commonly called a fixture plate. It is very flat and stress relieved, it machines nice as well. This will be bolted to th...

Regarding epoxied inserts into granite. The following is taken from Starret's FAQ"s on surface plates " 22) Isn't there a danger of pulling epoxied inserts out of the plate? A) Inserts that are properly bonded using high strength epoxy and good workmanship will withstand a great deal of torsional an...
